Heroes! Mortals and Myths in Ancient Greene

The Walters Art Museum
Sunday, October 11 - Sunday, January 03

Sometimes they are superhuman protagonists of ancient myths or modern fiction. Other times, they emerge in the form of average people who rise above the ordinary to help others, excel in competitions or display remarkable compassion. Using ancient Greek culture as a point of origin, this exhibition explores the inherent human need for heroes and descibes an extremely relevant cultural phenomena: the images of heroes mirror the values and cultural identity of their admirers. This exhibition will feature approximately 110 objects, including votive and grave reliefs, artifacts, and various media, including photo murals and installations, depicting actual sites of hero worship.
